Rush Hour on Mt. Sinai - It is avoidable!
|
Mt. Sinai is visited by hundreds of people every day, but to really appreciate it you have to avoid the crowds and take a little bit more time. Just off the usual route there are other important religious sites, such as the Rock of Moses, the Monastery of the 40 Martyrs and several ancient chapels, Byzantine ruins and monastic gardens hidden in beautiful mountain top basins. 1 - 4 day programs can be organized.
The only traditional Bedouin garden near Mount Sinai, Ramadan's Garden, is located in Wadi el Leja, right below the peaks of Mt. Sinai and Mt. Katherine, offering a pleasant and interesting alternative to staying in a hotel in town. The Elijah Camp, just below to the summit of Mt. Sinai, is in a small walled court under ancient cypress trees in a Bedouin tent. On the overnight walks camp can be provided in one or both of these places. |

Ramadan's Garden in Wadi Leja
The typical Jabaleya Bedouin garden is located in Wadi Leja, right below the holy peaks of Mt. Sinai and Mt. St. Katherine, overlooking the Monastery of Forty Martyrs and a large olive grove. There are many different fruit trees, vegetables and mountain herbs in the garden. It has a number of Bedouin tents - one of them the hearth where Ramadan meets his guests and plays the simsimiya next to the camp fire - and secluded stone huts above the garden with small terraces and sitting places. There are a big water tank, cleaning areas and a couple of toilets.

The Elijah Camp on Mt. Sinai
It is located just below the summit of Mt. Sinai, in the basin of Elijah (Farsh Eliyas), under ancient cypress trees and an olive in a stone walled court. There is a cosy Bedouin tent, divided into a larger and a smaller sleeping room and a sitting area around the camp fire. Matresses and blankets are provided, as well as a hearthy breakfast with Bedouin bread. There are a number of composting toilets next to the camp.

Mt. Sinai Walks
Our walks offer an alternative to the usual toursit route, with seeing many more sights and avoiding the masses of tourists. The 1 to 3 day walks follow an unused old path, with even more sights on the longer hikes, according to your pace and time available. On the overnight walks camp is provided in one or both of the retreats. You can also add an extra hike to the highest mountain in Egypt, Mt. Katherine.
The walks start from the town of St. Catherine.
